Christian Egyptians protested on Sunday in the town of Mellawy over the grotesque shooting of four priests and the violent beating of four other priests which took place at the Abu Fanah Monastery.
Over three hundred Copts gathered in front of the Orthodox Church headquarters in Mellawy 300 kilometers south of Cairo to protest the events that occurred in the historical Abu Fanah Monastery in which four Copts were assaulted with firearms and one Muslim was killed.
Two months prior to the incident, priests got approval to build a wall around the monastery which commenced just a few days before the assault took place. In retaliation, residents of the villages close by attacked the monastery with weapons and heavy machinery destroying the wall and burning two nearby churches along with their fields.
Father Domadyous of the monastery says, ?We were shocked to hear heavy shooting of firearms and saw the attackers get a hold of our field equipment to use it for destruction of two rooms in the monastery used for solitude and burn down three others.?
Three priests were kidnapped by Muslims and were released and taken to hospitals on Sunday after being viscously beaten, tortured, tied and humiliated.
Father Boulos told French press that one of the abducted priests was struck by a firearm and suffered a broken leg. ?This is the eighteenth time this monastery gets attacked in the course of the last seven years. The last one was in January of 2008,? stated Father Domadyous and adds that no one has ever been arrested for committing these heinous crimes. ?The police always ignore our claim,? the disheartened priest declares.
These clashes came a few days after the brutal slaying of a local jeweler and his three employees, four Christians from the city of Alexandria.
The governor of El-Menyah, Ahmad Deya el Deen said, ?What happened was probably a personal dispute, not a religious one.?
